Negotiating your involuntary severance

4:19 am Business

So you have become the focus of your company’s redeployment efforts — and you are looking at a possible involuntary severance. Don’t forget that you may be able to negotiate certain aspects of your termination. First of all, you may be able to negotiate the specific release date — if you can extend it even a few weeks, that can make all the difference. Secondly, you may be able to negotiate an additional bonus or pay out for your severance — speak with your employer frankly and tell them that you have financial needs, and would greatly appreciate an additional payment at the time of your severance. Some companies will consider this, some will not — but it always pays to ask. Thirdly, don’t forget to make inquiries to see if there might be other departments where you could be employed — in some cases you may have to relocate, but the opportunities may be available somewhere else if you are willing to move.
