March 26, 2008 4:19 am HealthOccurring naturally in the body, chondroitin sulfate is found in almost all body tissues. It is the natural component of cartilage that cushions joints and is believe to promote water retention and elasticity in joint cartilage. Chondroitin sulfate joint food supplements are thought to help slow the breakdown of cartilage by protecting it from destructive enzymes. Many supplements now contain chondroitin, claimed by some doctors to possibly be an effective help for osteoarthritis. Studies in the past thirty years indicate that it has promise of relieving arthritis pain and improving joint function, but more studies are needed to prove this use. In addition to its anti-inflammatory properties, Chondroitin has also been thought to be a helpful antioxidant.
