The Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge in NJ is a great place to visit if you like hiking, birding and viewing interesting plants and animals. The Wilderness Area open to the public features several miles of foot trails. Whether you are interested in a casual stroll or a more strenuous hike, there are plenty of trails to explore at Great Swamp. Great Swamp is home to a huge variety of bird species, and many more visit the area during seasonal migrations. You can observe waterfowl as well as hawks, woodpeckers, songbirds and many other types of birds at Great Swamp. There are two bird blinds on site at the Refuge. In addition to birds, there are many interesting mammals, reptiles and amphibians to see at Great Swamp. White-tailed deer, red fox, raccoons, skunks, beaver and other mammals reside here.  You may also observe a variety of frogs, turtles and snakes during your visit to the Refuge. Wildlife is best viewed at the Refuge during early morning and late afternoon hours, but you can see some animals at almost any time of the day. Along your hike, you will also enjoy seeing beautiful wildflowers, trees, ferns and grasses at Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge.
