There is a big difference between speech recognition and voice recognition

I’m sure that you have heard of voice dictation software — a person sitting at their computer can wear a microphone headset and dictate, and the computer will be trained to understand and decipher the sounds and will supply the appropriate text automatically. Voice dictation software has revolutionized how doctors and lawyers do their record-keeping, for example. But voice dictation software is not the same as speech recognition — the kind of technology that is in place, for example, when you contact a company and to speak into the phone to identify the menu selection or department that you need. For these systems, you need something much more powerful — technology which will allow computers to recognize not just one person’s voice, but any persons voice. As you might expect, this is a much more complex task, and this software is truly advanced and powerful.
