Name of Allahabad city was given in 1583 by Mughal emperor Akbar. It means “City of God” and refers to Islam as the religion of the ruling elite. The ancient name of Allahabad – Prayag ( “merger” or “place of sacrifice”). It is believed that after creating the world Brahma performed here for the first sacrifice. Flights to Dehradun is also from here. The city has great significance for Hindus, as There is a fusion of the sacred rivers Ganga and Yamuna, and – the invisible Saraswati. Allahabad – one of the largest cities of Uttar Pradesh. It occupies a large area on the peninsula formed by the rivers Ganges and Yamuna. On the other banks of these rivers are satellite cities of Allahabad.
